Chrome - Moly Shafts

Why Chrome-Moly Steel?
When Solex Carburetors were first developed, steel making was still
a basic industry. Most of what was available consisted of what are
now known as "mild" and "medium" steels. These have good
balance of strength, toughness, high-wear resistance, and good
machineability. An excellent material for shafts; for holding /
controlling the butterflies. Black oxide coated, for the protection and
appearance
Solex bodies are cast pot-metal. A solid, durable, relatively soft
material. Screws were, and are now, steel. Brass was used for
butterflies, jets and bushings.
Overtightening can distort the shape of the carbs, especially at the
mating faces, while mis-threading can strip threading in the carb
body. Jets are easily damaged. Bushings are subject to wear,
making for a loose fitting shaft. Shafts are subject both to usage
wear and to bending and twisting as linkage controls are
overtightened. At that time, it is doubtful whether anyone conceived
that these carburetors would still be in use 40 years later!
In describing our remanufacturing process, you know that we reface
carburetor mating surfaces, and use helicoils or inserts if needed in
the carb body. Jets are carefully sized. Butterflies are still made from
brass, new ones custom made for each set of carbs. There are only
two places where we replace parts with non-original metals: The
bushings are replacing with bearing bronze and the shafts are
replaced with Chrome-Moly alloy steel.
Chrome-Moly is a fairly recent development in steel manufacture. The
addition of Chromium with Molybdenum gives a high tensile steel that
has a good balance of strength and toughness along with higher wear
resistance than "regular" steel. Chrome-Moly shafts will resist the
bending and twisting forces Solex shafts are subjected to. Shafts
have been treated with Black-Oxide to keep that original look.
Chrome-Moly shafts will add many years of performance to your
Solex carburetors.
